SGR is a WAMSS initiative where clinical year students help 3rd years students with learning how to perform the clinical examinations and help pass the OSCEs.
We have two types of tutorials that we run. The first is examination technique - in these, you'll be in groups of 6 and get to practice doing the examinations on each other, and the tutor will help out with any problems or teach you anything that you want to learn, so hopefully you'll be fully prepared come OSCE time. If there is time at the end of the session, you might be able to go into the hospital with the tutor to practice the examination on a patient. The second type of tutorial we'll run are signs rounds - these will be in smaller groups (max 4 people) and you'll get taken into the hospital to practice the examinations on patients who actually have the signs you've learnt about - so you'll get to hear heart murmurs, feel tracheal deviation, feel hepatomegaly, see nystagmus etc. That way when you do the OSCE at the end of each module and you're given patients (which can be patients with real signs) you'll know what you're looking for instead of just going through the motions. Plus, when you get into 4th year, the consultants expect that you know how to do all the examinations and expect that you'll know how to recognise and have seen most of the important signs. Just a note - if you are going to come to the "signs rounds", please make sure you know how to do the examinations at a passable level, because otherwise you won't get to see as many signs.
The examination technique tutorials will be run in week 2 of each FCP module, and the signs rounds in week 3, before each OSCE. We'll try to do these as close to when you finish your lectures as possible, most likely on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday. SGR tutes will be done for every FCP module throughout the year, so make sure you check the website regularly to sign up - as tutes fill up I'll create some more so if you miss out the first time you look, check back later.
You can sign up for SGR tutes here.Hope to see you all at the SGR tutes - they're a great opportunity to get some clinical experience before you hit the hospitals for real in 4th year!
Remember to dress appropriately becuase you'll be going into the hospital and seeing patients.
