Environment

EnviroWAMSS is a new initiative by the medical students of UWA to develop a healthier world through developing a more sustainable one. The WHO estimate around the globe 1/4 of global disease is caused by modifiable environmental factors and as such it is our responsibility as future doctors to educate ourselves and take action now on issues ranging from climate change to urban air pollution. Medicine is populated by innovative thinkers and doers and this environmental crusade aims to improve your interaction with the environment and have fun along the way.

Throughout the year we aim to:

1) Calculate WAMSS carbon footprint and reduce emissions produced by events and activities of WAMSS, and further carbon offset these to some extent, working with a transparent carbon offsetting company and within reason.

2) Educate medical students on vital environmental issues and living through innovative modern ideas while promoting WAMSS stance on these issues. Hold a number of promotional and educational events with notable speakers in enjoyable environments. Provide contacts and outlets for medical students to learn more and do more to help the environment through promotional material.

3) Define and facilitate the role of medical students in the protection of the environment and ethical living in general. Introduce health issues associated with environmental impacts such as climate change, and environmental issues faced as a doctor. Demonstrate the ethical choices we can make every day in line with environmental sustainability.
