MDA Temple of Wellbeing
Hi Folks! Welcome to the MDA Temple of Wellbeing. The Temple is a place of positivity, play and procrastination, with bits and bobs about all manner of interesting things. In addition to the regular subsections, YOU are welcome to contribute to the Temple with feedback, recipes, exercise + stress-management techniques, movie/music/book/performance/travel/food reviews and anything else you feel like sharing (not STIs). In particular, if you are involved in an activity outside of medicine that you wish to promote (ie a band, a sports team, a theatre troupe etc) – let us know so we can support you! Prizes await for contributors. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to make a submission. Handy Advice for the Week
Lighten your load
Make sure you’re only carrying today’s burdens. Too often we carry far more than necessary. Reduce your load by dropping tomorrow’s worries, and yesterday’s baggage. Present pressures and problems are usually enough. Leave tomorrow’s until later.
From “Now Is The Time: 170 ways to seize the moment” by Patrick Lindsay.
Handy Latin phrase for the Week
De te scire volo solum ubi gentium sis cum alicuius indigeam.
The only thing I wish to know about you is where the hell you are when I want something.
Spiritual Wellbeing Tip of the Week
Watching the Thoughts
An early exercise in meditation is to take an objective look at the mind in order to see what goes on within it, and the tricks that it can play.
- Sit and relax. Close your eyes and turn your attention inward. As objectively as you can, watch the thoughts that pass through your awareness. Don’t judge them, or attempt to hang on to pleasant ones, or push unpleasant ones away. Just watch.
- Notice the nature and content of your thoughts – how one thought leads to another, and how quickly a chain of associations is set up. Notice how these associations sometimes follow a single theme, or go off at a tangent into a quite different set of considerations. Notice how intent your mind seems on distracting your attention, and observe the strategies it uses to do so.
- Notice how easily your objective awareness does in fact disappear, and you become “lost” in your thoughts. Each time this happens, gently re-establish awareness.
- Continue the exercise for as long as seems comfortable. Afterward, write down what you have discovered about your mind.

Recipe of the Week
Perfect Scrambled Eggs with Crispy Bacon (serves 4)
Ingredients: 8 slices streaky bacon, 8 eggs, ½ cup milk, salt and freshly ground black pepper, 30g butter, 4 slices bread grilled or toasted, chopped parsley
Method: Either grill, fry or bake the bacon slices until they are crispy. Lightly beat the eggs with a fork just enough to break up the eggs. Add the milk and seasoning. Heat a non-stick fry pan to only moderately hot and add the butter. Pour in the egg mixture. When the mixture starts to set on the bottom, carefully scrape this off the bottom, letting more liquid egg run into its place. Continue in this way until there is only a small amount of the liquid mixture left. Remove the eggs from the heat at this point. Turn the eggs out onto the hot toast and serve with a scatter of parsley, topped with two slices of crispy bacon.
Suggestion: For a really special brunch, when serving the eggs, top them with a scatter of chopped chives, a small handful of rocket leaves and two slices of folded smoked salmon.
Tip: Always remove the eggs from the heat while there is still some moisture left in the eggs. There will enough heat left in the eggs to complete the cooking and you will have perfect soft curds with no puddle.
