In 2010, I took a year off uni and headed to north west Tanzania to work as a volunteer at a local hospital. By chance, my host family lived next door to an orphanage of 40 children and simply put, I had such a great time there, I’ve been back every year since. We established a small charity here in Perth last year to help support the children over there and we are about to undertake a massive project to rebuild the orphanage and an adjoining school to cater for our ever-expanding number of kids.
We have our eyes on nearly 15 acres of land nearby to our current location, which is about 30 minutes outside the regional capital of Arusha. We’re planning to build a place that will be fully self-sustainable, with solar power, fresh water supplies, our own crops, cattle, chickens, goats and a soccer pitch. Not only will this reduce our dependence on the volatile supply of food and energy, seen in much of East Africa, but also it will help us educate our children on the importance of environmental sustainability and agriculture.
This short video highlights some of the extraordinary achievements of our kids and gives a little glimpse into our dream to transform their lives immeasurably.
