Week Three – Access to Essential Medicines

ghsc

What the Flupen* is the TPP? A2EM? MSF, IP, R&D, EMP, NCDs, NTDs… in Week Three we demystify a raft of acronyms, unmask hidden legal restrictions, and explore the barriers inhibiting access to essential medicines throughout the world. We’ll be treated to talks from Assoc/Prof Peter Sinden an expert in intellectual property and patent law, speaking on how these dramatically cut off the world’s poor’s access to vital medicines; Dr Rosemary Wyber leads us through the world of global governance and public health and guides us on to activism; while MSF nurse Devi Lalloo gives us a personal insight from her time in South Sudan and her work with MSF’s Access Campaign.

Access to essential meds is not just the final step of holding the medicine in your hands. The journey from drug idea to treated disease is a long and surprising one, and one that more often than not doesn’t reach the empty hand of the person who needs it.

Have a read of our weekly GHSC publication “Get to Know Your World” – it’s chock-a-block full of interesting articles on topics such as XDR TB in PNG (more acronyms), the landmark Novartis case, and a run down on the TPP.
